  • Laboratory Of Mechanical Properties And Strength (30128)
  • תקציר הקורס:

    Abstract:

This course provides students with practical experience in testing and calculating of mechanical properties of materials.

Using various measurement equipment, the students apply topics learned in Material Science courses 1&2, and Strength of materials

1 about responses of materials to different types of mechanical loading and heat-treatments.

The students acquire knowledge of operating standard engineering

measurement equipment and deepen their understanding of material properties.
  • Principles Of Materials Science & Engineering (30137)
  • תקציר הקורס:

    Abstract:

Materials science applications in mechanical design, material structure, strengthening mechanisms, mechanical properties of materials (elastic properties, plastic and fracture), properties derived from engineering production processes, cold work processing versus hot work processing, general heat treatments (stress relief, annealing), weld failure preventing, dynamic properties, mechanical properties at high temperatures, the phase diagram. Steels - heat treatments and hardenability, surface hardening, and steal specifications. Aluminum alloys - Heat treatments, Temper designations, welding, coating, and processes.
  • Polymers And Plastic Materials (30218)
  • תקציר הקורס:

    Abstract:

It is hard to imagine the modern technological developments without the materials and products made of polymers. The newly made polymers have a strong impacts on manufacturing of advanced aircrafts, vehicles, medical implants, fiber optics, membranes building materials, packaging, furniture ornaments and many more essential products. The two courses of Polymers and Plastic Materials will qualify the students to be able to work and research in the fields of polymers and plastics.
  • Practical Aspects Of Biomaterials Science (30354)
  • תקציר הקורס:

    Abstract:

    This course introduce the student

with the field of biomaterials science,

the compatibility of implants to the tissue (biocompatibility) and standard biocompatibility tests.

Examples from the orthopedic field, dental implants, cardiovascular field, skin,

sutures and more will be presented. Additionally the student will learn about characterization

methods of materials and surface modifications to enhance implants’ func tionality.

Other important parameters will be discussed as sterilization methods, packaging compatibility,

corrosion in biological environment and treatments to avoid corrosion, biodegradation of materials,

while some ethical and regulatory issues will be discussed, preliminary tests of safety

and efficiency of the device and more. In addition, few laboratory experiments will be taken:

Measure the density of solid materials and calculate the concentration of alcohol from its density,

Create capsules from cross-linked polymer containing drug and monitor drug release, and

a Tour at a materials laboratory at Tel Aviv University containing a 3D printer for

hydrogels and cells, a spectrophotometer, a rheometer for measuring the viscoelastic

properties of materials and a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
  • Advanced Topics In Bio Materials (50215)
  • תקציר הקורס:

    Abstract:

This course gives the student an introduction to the science of biomaterials, adaptation of implants to biological tissue (biocompatibility) and tissue compatibility tests, while providing examples from the orthopedics, dental field and more.

The student will also acquire knowledge about techniques used to characterize materials and surface treatments that can be performed in order to increase the adaptation of the implant to the tissue.

In addition, the students will be exposed to parameters that must be taken into account, such as accepted sterilization methods, the suitability of the packaging material for the implant, corrosion processes in the body and solutions, degradation of materials in a biological environment, an examination of ethical and regulatory issues of medical devices in the development process, preliminary tests of the safety and effectiveness of the implant, and more.

Moreover, the course will expose the student for the first time to wet chemical work, safety rules and laboratory experience in the field of biomaterials.
  • Material For Medical Engineering And Implants (50303)
  • תקציר הקורס:

    Abstract:

This course introduces the students with the field of materials science,

in particular the relation between the microstructure and its final properties.

The main idea is that the func tion improvement of a component

depends on its properties, which depends on the microstructure

determined by processes. Suitable engineering planning will avoid failures.

Microstructure will be studied from the atomic phase through the crystallographic

and up to the macrostructure. The student will learn about characterization

of materials and standard tests. Physical and chemical aspects of

various phases will assist us in understanding the alloying

purpose and will help us in composition planning.

In addition, some ethical and regulatory issues will be discussed,

preliminary tests of safety and efficiency of the device and biocompatibility.
