Abstract:

This course will discuss ethics, with a focus on medical ethics.

We discuss medical information, how it is used to provide information, the concept of freedom of information, the need for medical secrecy

and the public’s right to know; the storage and safekeeping of medical information, and patients' rights. We discuss ethical considerations

regarding experiments and research on humans that is done with informed consent as well as experiments on animals.

Other areas of study will include abortion; new fertilization treatments, genetic intervention; cloning; stem cell use; organ donation.

We will also discuss the terminal patient and the patient who wants to die.

Subtopics include prolonging life, the right to die, euthanasia, relevant legislation, engineering solutions.
