- Composite Materials (30219) Course summary:
Abstract:
The course addresses the composition, formulation, processing and mechanical behaviour of composite materials, with an emphasis on systems based on polymer matrices. Thermoset, thermoplastic and elastomeric matrices will be considered in combination with continuous and discontinuous fibres, particles, fillers and f?unctional additives.
The course examines the relationships between material composition, interface structure, reinforcement or filler morphology, manufacturing process and final properties. Systems based on glass, carbon, aramid and natural fibres will be discussed, together with carbon-based materials such as carbon black, graphite, graphene and carbon nanotubes, as well as mineral fillers, ceramic particles and metal oxides.
The analytical part of the course covers composition calculations, basic micromechanics and the behaviour of orthotropic plies and continuous-fibre laminates. Students will be introduced to Classical Lamination Theory and will learn to calculate and interpret the A, B and D stiffness matrices. Manufacturing methods, processing defects, failure mechanisms, environmental durability and nondestructive testing methods will also be discussed.
